Joe got on the Internet and found his dream internship: KNBC in Los Angeles. Without knowing anyone in California, Joe flew to L.A., rented an apartment, and bought a bike to get to and from the station (his shift started at 3:30 a.m.). He’s worked all summer as a producer in one of the country’s largest media markets.

The Shock Factor: Covering Gun Tragedies, Airliner Crashes and Deadly Natural Disasters

“There are three kinds of people who run toward disaster, not away: cops, firemen, and reporters.” – Rod Dreher, New York Post columnist.
Kenn Marshall thought he was going to a typical press conference on Jan. 22, 1987, when an unspeakably violent event occurred stunning a room full of reporters and, worse, TV viewers who were watching the event live.  Sharon Santus led a team of reporters and photographers after a loner opened fire on co-workers at a Missouri manufacturing plant. When the firing stopped, four people were dead and five others were wounded.
 

 

 

The Rapid Rate of Change in Journalism (Future Shock to the 100th Power)

In 1970, Alvin Toffler introduced the world to the concept of “Future Shock” in his book of the same name. In this seminal work, future shock is defined as “too much change in too short a period of time.” Since 1970, the field of journalism has experienced future shock in warp speed: from electric typewriters, paste pots and pneumatic tubes to smart-phone reporting and blogging as journalism. And, there was a world of change in-between. This session will explore how journalism (and journalism education) has adapted to these changes and what the field might expect in the near (very near) future.

Bringing a TV Studio Production Into the 21st Century

A tour of the BUTV production studios detailing recent upgrades from an early 90s analog SD and DV tape workflow to state of the art digital HD tapeless environment.  The tour will include the four camera main production studio, the two camera small scale production studio with voiceover and Foley capabilities, and the tapeless editing labs.  A general overview of the Apple Xsan central storage system and Haivision Video Furnace IPTV and web streaming systems will also be presented.  Participants are encouraged to ask questions throughout the session to guide the conversation toward their primary interests.

Twitter has flashed revolutionary potential as illustrated by its role in the Arab Spring and other successful political protests. The microblogging and social media service has grown enormously and now boasts in upwards of 140 million active users who generate more than 340 million tweets per day. While Twitter is well-suited to the second-by-second news cycle that characterizes our contemporary mass media, many claim it is simply a passing fad. Meanwhile, journalists in both print and broadcast are struggling to find the best ways to incorporate Twitter and its content into their daily work.
